Don’t Include an Objective Statement; Here is Why

Most objective statements (career objective or career outlook sections) are vague and focus only on what the candidate wants. See these examples:

“To obtain a full-time position in information technology with an emphasis on technology integration; special interests include software design, consulting, systems analysis, and GIS.”

“A position in the travel industry, with a focus on sales and client relations”

“A full-time position in an environment that offers a greater challenge increased benefits for my family, and the opportunity to help the company advance efficiently and productively.”

These examples tell the reader little about the candidate, their experience and achievements or, most importantly, what specifically they can do for the organisation.

Objective statements are in prime position on your resume; it is crucial that you use this space to make a strong and persuasive first impression. All of these examples fail to do this.

In fact, most objective statements fail to do this.

Remember, everyone applying for the position wants it. A statement confirming this does nothing to differentiate you from the crowd. Furthermore, and most importantly, your focus should be on what you can provide to the employer (not what you want)

So what should you use instead? You have a couple of options.

Personal Branding Statement. A resume branding statement is usually one line that succinctly describes how you differ from the competition and what you will bring to the organisation.

Qualifications or Profile Summary. 3 to 5 statements or a small paragraph that draw the employer’s attention to your most important qualities, achievements and abilities. These statements should be your best evidence of why you should be interviewed ahead of other applicants.

Launch straight into your resume. Let your experience speak for itself.
